The Things that Go Unnoticed

There are many things I plan to talk about on this blog, but generally this will be a space to discuss things that often go unnoticed.

As you go through the images in my Gallery several of the patterns mention rows that are sewn on the diagonal. If you are familiar with sewing on the diagonal you know that many quilters use a setting triangle at the end of the row. I rarely, if ever, use a setting triangle—to me it leaves a blank space but does not finish or complete the row—I like to make half blocks instead of the setting triangle. All of my patterns show how to make these half blocks for that particular quilt.

In an art class I took years ago (as part of my drafting and interior design degree) the artist and instructor of the class said something that stuck with me—your art should never just stop, it should be like it goes off the canvas. I carry that lesson over into my quilt designs—I want the row to go off the canvas. Paintings rarely just stop, they carry to the edge and are then framed, in quilting the frame is created by the borders and the quilt should look like it carries off.

An example of this is my Heart Strings pattern. The one on the left has setting triangles and the one on the right has the half blocks that carry the design off the page. It may not be something that would bother you but it is sort of my thing.
